Four social networks you haven’t heard of but need to be paying attention to

New social media site continually pop up, most fail to get traction, but every once in a while some take off. As millennial usage of Facebook dies off and as Twitter struggles to stay relevant it allows new networks to pop up and gain traction.

Here are few I think are noteworthy:

Anchor

Anchor is radio crossed with Twitter. The app seeks to democratize voice publishing.  Anchor allows for users to create audio posts, called waves. Similar to Twitter Anchor caps waves to 2 minutes in length, or 60 seconds for replies. Users can also like and share waves.

Musical.ly

Musical.ly has been bouncing around the App Store top 100 for awhile now. In essence the app allows create share and discover short videos. Musical.ly allows you to splice together multiple videos and has variety of special effects you can add in. They also host challenges that users can compete in.

After School

One of the most interesting apps is After School an anonymous app tied to schools. The app uses Facebook to verify which high school users are attending. The app is restricted to current students only. Once in students can view memes, images, and text posts. After School is one of the top 50 social media apps in the App Store

Hyper

Currently only on iOS Hyper is a combination of Instagram and Reddit. Users can search photos based on hashtag and geotag. Users can up or down vote pictures similar to Reddit, but can remain anonymous. Hyper allows people to chat about whatever they love most.
